Google Dashboard: A Closer Look

Ian Paul, PC World

Nov 6, 2009 12:12 am

Google showed Thursday it's getting more serious about privacy when it launched a tool called Google Dashboard that aims to give you more control over your personal data stored on Google's servers. From your Google Dashboard you can view the company's privacy policies, easily access your most recent activity for each Google service you use, and manage settings for those services. My initial impression is that Dashboard is a quick and easy way to get greater control over your Google Account activity, and even clean up any services you may have forgotten about.

Accessing the Dashboard

To get into Google Dashboard, sign into your Google Account, click on the settings link at Google.com, and select "Google Account Settings." You can also click on "My Account" from your iGoogle page. Or just follow this link. This will take you to your Google Account page where you select "View data stored with this account" under "Personal Settings." Google will then ask you to enter your Google Account password again as an extra security measure before redirecting you to your Dashboard.

It should also be noted that from your Google Account page you can also see a list of all the Google services you use, but Dashboard gives you more information about what kind of data you have stored on each Google service.

Dashboard

When you land on Dashboard you will see a list of your Google services on the left-hand side. This list contains information about the Google services you use including your recent activity and basic statistics. Under Gmail, for example, you can see you how many messages you've sent, how many conversations are in your inbox, the number of Gmail chats you have saved, and even how many items are in your trash.

The statistics feature in Dashboard was particularly useful for me allowing me to take control of various services I hadn't used for a long time. For example, I'd completely forgotten that I'd signed up to use the social features on a few Websites using Google Friend Connect. But since I don't really visit those sites, or use Friend Connect, I was able to quickly navigate to my settings for this service and "unjoin" my Friend Connect Websites. I also noticed that Google Latitude had access to my Google Account information, but since I don't really use Latitude I easily revoked access for that application as well.

On the left side of Dashboard, you will see several links for managing your settings for each service and links to Google's privacy and help pages. Gmail in Dashboard, for example, lets you navigate directly to controls for your chat, security and general settings.

What's Missing?

While Google Dashboard looks like a handy tool, there are some services still missing. You can find information for Gmail, Google Docs, Calendar, Contacts, Blogger and more. But other popular services absent from Dashboard include Maps, Wave, Chrome Bookmark Sync, Google News, and business-related services like Google Analytics and AdSense. Google says it plans on integrating all Google services into Dashboard in the future. A company spokesperson told me that Google Video and Checkout should show up on your Dashboard in the next few days, and other services will begin to appear after that. Google also plans to integrate future products into Dashboard as they are released.

Dashboard for all?

Dashboard is an informative way to see what kind of data you have spread across Google's Web services. It also got me thinking that other online service providers should consider releasing a Dashboard-like product. Microsoft, for example, has similar services to Google including Bing Search, the beta version of MSN.com, Hotmail, Windows Live Sync, the upcoming Microsoft Office Web Apps and more. Windows Live does have an "all services" list that you can see, but it lacks the statistical overview that Google Dashboard has.

On the other hand some social networks already offer similar functionality to Google Dashboard. Facebook, for example, lets you edit which sites have access to your social networking account on the Applications Settings page (select "authorized" from the drop-down menu). Twitter also lets you see what services you are using under "Connections" on your account's Settings page.

Dashboard and Privacy

It will be interesting to see what privacy advocates have to say about Dashboard considering past criticisms leveled against Google involving Google Maps Street View, Google Latitude and Google Books.

One possible problem I found, for example, was the ability to tell my browser to save my account password for future visits to Google Dashboard. This means anyone could view my Dashboard if they hacked into or stole my computer. This is very different from Yahoo, which requires you to sign in every time you want to access your Yahoo Account information.

That being said, Dashboard does have some handy features that will help you maintain greater control over you data across Google's wide variety of services.

Dashboard worked better for you than for me.

It indicated 2 "talk" contacts, showing one. When I clicked to see the other, it took me to the "talk" page. So far as I know, I've never used this service. I still don't know who the other "contact" is supposed to be. The listed one is a person I'd exchanged one e-mail with via gmail.

It indicated I'd installed 8 gadgets, and I wondered what a gadget is, so clicked on "about gadget" and got this:

quote] The page - www.google.com/talk$%7B/intl/___LANG___ - does not exist.

Suggestions:

* Check the spelling of the address you typed
* If you are still having problems, please visit the Help Center
There's no mention of Google Translate, from which Google has blocked my IP address five times in the past week, for no discernable reason, and without responding to my e-mailed requests for an explanation.

Nor does it show that I've entered several posts on this subject in the Google Help forum.

In fact, all this "service" does is tell me how many spam I've gotten, how many messages are in trash (I'm surprised there are only 224!), and how many are in my gmail in box. Whoop de doo!

Maybe Google should focus on fixing things, like the faulty "automated enquiry" detection that locks users out, directing them to a CAPTCHA that doesn't display, or the lack of any documentation on this annoying and insulting robonanny(According to Google's "we're sorry" message, you're either a spammer, a pirate, or a fool whose pc has been hijacked) before riding off in new directions on the same blind and temperamental donkey.

Oh yeah..I just noticed this modest entry at the bottom of the page:

quote]Other products

Requesting data for Other products...

The following products are not yet available in this dashboard.

Google Code

Google Book Search
Talk about the blind leading the blind...

Which reminds me - when is Google going to rediscover proximity searches?

IAS, IPS free coaching centre opens branch in Anna Nagar

Manidha Naeyam IAS and IPS Free Coaching Centre opened a branch in Anna Nagar East on Monday.

Nearly 600 civil service aspirants would benefit from the setting up of the branch. The coaching centre is a wing of the Manidha Naeyam Charitable Trust founded by former MLA Saidai S. Duraisamy.

Participating in the inauguration ceremony, Mr. Duraisamy said that education is the only tool to attain equality in society. Civil service aspirants must understand their responsibilities and work for the downtrodden. He also explained the features of www.saidais.com, a website offering free online coaching for the candidates.

Commending the initiative, the centre’s advisory committee member and former Vice-Chancellor of Anna University V. C. Kuzhandaisamy said educating youngsters free of cost was an act of patriotism.

Pointing out that the number of civil servants from Tamil Nadu had dwindled over the past two decades, he said lack of proper facilities was one of the reasons for that. The coaching centre would help in providing equal opportunities to all. Of the 100 candidates selected from Tamil Nadu last year, 25 were from the Manidha Naeyam IAS and IPS Free Coaching Centre, he added.

Former Home Secretary R. Poornalingam said hard work and focussed attention were the watchwords to succeed in the competitive examinations. “You (students) must spend 14 hours a day on preparing for the examination and develop a habit to read and analyse news,” he said.

Even if candidates failed to become civil servants, skill development and knowledge acquisition would help them when they opted for other careers, he added.

While former Director General of Police A. X. Alexander traced the progress of the coaching centre, former Highways Department secretary M. Abul Hassan said that a similar facility must be started in south Chennai.

The coaching centre’s director Vaa.Voo. Si. said the first coaching centre was started in CIT Nagar in 2006. While 12 candidates from the centre were selected for Civil Services in 2007, the figure rose to 25 last year. A general knowledge monthly magazine was also released at the function.

R.Gopalaswamy, a candidate chosen for Indian Revenue Service, shared his experience. The Trust’s director Mallika Duraisamy and the trust’s managing director Vetri Duraisamy also participated.

நாடோடிகள் New Trend for FRIENDS LIFE

 • NAdodigal

When we starve forlove, often we will find friends and relative who support our love. Many a time they support us from heart anddon’t mind their personal losses. However, once we get the love, do we

live it to match thesacrifice?? How we reciprocate the loveand support they give t

o us in forms of money, material things, prayers andblood?? This is true in the case offreedom as well. As a nation, we foughtfor the freedom of the country and sacrificed a lot of lives for that. Do we really value their sacrifices and arewe ready to fight to protect it? If ‘love’ is in danger, do we fight with thesame spirit, as we think for the country?? Nadodigal will discuss the price of love and the need to fight f

or it.

Karuna (Sasi Kumar), Pandi (Bharani)and Chandran (Vijay Vasanth) arevery close friends. Karuna has finishedhis B.A. in history and is in desperate search for a government job, so that hecan marry his uncles’s daughter (Nivetha). Chandran wants to set up a computer center andis in love with Karuna’s sister Pavitra (Abhinaya). Chandran & father is like friendsand his father is in full support of this love. Pandian (Bharani) is planning to go abroad and has applied for the passport. His father loves him deeply but cannot showthe love since Pandian’s step mother doesn’t like it. Karuna’s college mate and friend Saravanancome to visit and stay with Karuna for few days. He was added to the friendship circle. One day, Saravanan attempt to suicide wherehe felt that he will not be able to marry the girl he loves. The friends decide to start a journey to savethe love of their friend, where the journey was not that easy. Watch the rest on screen and you will simplylove it!!

Samuthirakkani, the director who had given us Subramanyapuramentertains us more this time. A wellknitted story – Nadodigal is a celebration of love and friendship. More than the story, it is the treatment ofthe characters, their relation that makes the difference. The friendship between the trio, fatherlylove, love which requires sacrifice…Nadodigal provide us with many memorablesituations. The story is very grippingand many scenes will keep us on edge of the seat. At the same time, excellent comedy was wovenwithout destroying any characters and suitable to the situations. The director compromised in some places, likethe unwanted ‘item number’. Here, thechoreographer failed the director miserably. Screen play is not fool proof, as there is serious lack of logic in somescenes, especially in the second half. However, when we consider the film in its totality, the plus pointscompensate for those faults. Compare to Subramaniyapuram, Nadodigal maylook little more entertaining. Also, the message is told in clear terms in the film. My appreciation to Samuthirakkani!

SasiKumar is brilliant as Karuna. He didcomplete justice to the emotionally charged, at the same time matured character. VijayVasanth however underplayed his role. Here, I thought some support was required for the character in thesecond half in which he got overshadowed. Bharaniplayed the observant & funny character brilliantly. Leading ladies Abhinaya and Nivetha (Whohave a little of Kavya Madhavan look) did their small roles beautifully. GanjaKaruppu adds to the fun. All thesupporting casts whose name I am not familiar with did good performance.

Cinematography is excellent with great mixof light and shade to suite the emotions and situations. Editing is perfect. We will not feel that the connection isinterrupted at any time or any scene unduly lengthy. Perfect jobs there!

Music is one department the film does notmatch to its predecessor, Subramaniyapuram. There is no song to match the ‘Kankal Irundal’ magic. However, the BGM director compensated forthe shortage and the ‘Sambo siva sambo’ still echo in my mind’sbackground. Once absorbed to thescenes, the extended time of continuous play of BGM was a sure success for theBGM director and to the film director.

Overall, ‘Nadodigal’is a must watch film for its excellent mix of art values in a commerciallyformatted film. In that sense,Samuthirakkani work as a bridge between the two houses of cinema. The best Tamil movie I have seen in a yearor two. Don’t miss this excellent filmwhich you will like for its story, characters, entertainment and message!!

SUN SETS FOR MOON WALKER

s
BAD NEWs For World POP KING Michael Jackson Death - Thursday June 25th 2009
SUN Sets for MOON WALKER

ALERT: It has been confirmed Michael Jackson is dead, aged 50 years, passing away Thursday 25th June at around 2.26pm. As news sources reported I personally could still not take in the news. Only when seeing Michael's elder brother Jermaine Jackson speaking to the press did it start to sink in.

Michael suffered what is believed to have been a cardiac arrest at his home. They tried to resuscitate him at his home and also when paramedics arrived, as well as at the hospital, trying in vain for 1 hour to revive him.

A cardiac arrest is when the heart stops beating, it does not mean he had heart attack, or though these can be the cause of a cardiac arrest. The coroners are expected to find out the cause of death within the next 24 -48 hours.

Many rumours abound, many seem to be linked to the use of pain killers. Due to toxicology tests to be carried out it is likely to take 6 - 8 weeks before cause of death is known.

May our prays and thoughts be with Michael Jackson, a single father of 3 children, his family including his mother and father and all extended family and true friends.

My thoughts are also with the many millions of devasted Michael Jackson fans from around the world. I know how you feel. AllMJ Twitter

(as the news unfolded on Thursday 25th June): TMZ.com has reported Michael Jackson has been rushed to hospital in Los Angeles with a cardiac arrest, suspected heart attack. TMZ.com has reported that Michael Jackson is dead. As of yet just watching Sky News it seems at the time of writing there has been no confirmation that Michael Jackson has died. There's constantly false rumours about Michael's health, I'm praying this is one of them. Of course wishing, hoping and praying for Michael's health and his family at this time.

June 27th Latest Michael Jackson's body has been released back to his family. As of yet there is no news on his funeral. We will keep you updated here on any Michael Jackson Funeral News.

The coroners have ruled out any foul play in the death of Michael Jackson. However it may take 4 - 6 weeks for a cause of death to be known due to the waiting of results of toxicology tests.

June 28th The BET Awards are filled with tributes to Michael Jackson from an array of stars, including Beyonce, and Stevie Wonder. P Diddy stated a tribute song to Michael Jackson has been recorded.

Michael's Dad Joseph attended the BET Awards and confirmed to the press no funeral plans had been finalized yet. Janet Jackson spoke to the audience.

June 29th Joe Jackson gives an outside press conference with Al Sharpton and lead singer from the Chi Lites. Not much info on Michael Jackson funeral, although did talk about a record company. Bit bizarre really.

June 30th New photos of Michael rehearsing for the 02 Arena "This Is It Tour" are released. He looked in good health.

Randy Philips, boss of AEG LIVE has spoken about Michael's last days and stated that he was in good form. They have said all tickets will be fully refunded, including all related transaction charges. They have given the option for ticket holders to keep there tickets. These tickets are amazing, an idea of Michael's and personally approved by him. He wanted a video like effect on the ticket, I assume like a Hologram. There's at least 8 different designs.

Randy has also stated that people must see this show, it was amazing and very technologically advanced. As fans we know Michael always wanted to do the best possible. Randy wants the Jackson family and other artists to possibly do the show in the future.

Update on Michael's Funeral The Jackson family have stated that there will be no public viewing of Michael's body. There will be a public memorial service, at the Staples Center in Los Angeles. This is the place Michael performed his last rehearsal.

Video footage of Michael Jackson rehearsing has been released. He can be seen performing "They Don't Care ABout Us". He looks thin, but in fine form.
